Best trail-cam strategiesWhitetail deer hunters know that trail cameras are one of the best tools in the kit.  They work 24/7 and show what kind of bucks are around and what time they are moving.  If you spot a trophy buck, you can pass on others while waiting to see him with your own eyes … and then through your scope.  But setting a trail camera up next to a deer feeder is not necessarily the best location because mature bucks tend to not come to feeders.  A good strategy is to think outside the box or, in this case, outside the feed pen.  “A lot of times, you are not going to get that 5 percent of the bucks because they will not come to a feeder, and often that 5 percent are the guys you’re after,” said James Kroll, whose nickname is Dr. Deer. “If they do, they’re not going to come during legal shooting time.”  A pioneer in deer studies since 1975, Kroll is the director of the Institute for White-tailed Deer Management and Research and the College of Forestry and Agriculture at Stephen F.
