Allstate Insurance Co. has put out a list of four tips for a safer, more enjoyable boating experience this summer. Summer is a great time to spend time on the water with family and friends. Many of us can’t wait for the warmer weather so we can spend our days wake boarding, fishing, or just swimming off your boat. Fun on the water can quickly turn to tragedy though. The U.S. Coast Guard counted 4,588 boating accidents that involved 3,081 injuries in 2011. Here are some easy ways to keep your crew safe while on your boat.
Wear Your Life Jacket:
The USCG requires all boats to have an approved Type I, II, III or V life jacket for every person aboard. 80% of all boating fatalities would have been prevented if the victims had only been wearing a life jacket.
Limit Alcohol Use:
In 2011, there were 361 boating accidents and 149 fatalities with alcohol use reported as a contributing factor. The boat operator should never drink, and the USCG recommends passengers avoid excessive alcohol use.
Keep An Eye On The Sky:
Check local weather reports before heading to the dock and while you are on the water. A marine radio, FM radio or weather aps on your smart phone are a good way to keep track of changing weather conditions. If you notice darkening clouds, volatile and rough changing winds, or sudden drops in temperature it is time to head back to the dock.
Be Aware:
Nearly 24 percent of accidents in 2011 were caused by a distracted operator or a poor lookout. Boating skills such as the ability to read navigation charts and signs, knowing the navigation rules of overtaking and passing other vessels and knowing what navigation lights signify are essential for every boat operator.
Just following these four simple guidelines will reduce boating accidents and ensure that you and your crew has a safe and enjoyable summer on the water.
