What is Environmental Intelligence

NOAA logoIt’s the information at the core of NOAA’s mission-it’s the foresight and information people need to live well and safely on our dynamic planet. Leading up to Earth Day, we will share some of our features that highlight the environmental intelligence that NOAA Fisheries uses to manage and conserve our marine resources.

  • In the Gulf of Alaska, the Integrated Ecosystem Research Project brings together physical oceanographers, fish biologists, and other scientists to decipher how physical and biological forces in the ocean combine to determine fish recruitment.

  • NOAA scientists conduct fish surveys all along the nation’s coasts to monitor trends in fish abundance and changes in the marine ecosystem. Go behind the scenes on this groundfish survey in the Gulf of Mexico, which runs 24 hours a day-one shift from noon to midnight and the other shift from midnight to noon.

  • When it comes to gathering intelligence on climate impacts on marine life, we get a little help from our friends. Here, a ribbon seal wears a satellite tag so NOAA Fisheries scientists can learn more about ice seal populations and movements in the face of climate change. Learn more about the science behind protecting ice seals.
