Fishing with Bill Miller Report

Fishing with Bill Miller LogoTrout fishing over the deep grass flats, 3-6 feet, has been very good in the Pinellas Point area on calm days. I was out this week and had good trout action fishing with Brad Whery. In the winter I like to use dark soft plastics on a 1/8 or ¼ ounce jig head and move the jig very slow.

Whery and I were having very little action on the dark colors even though we had seen some nice trout run off as we drifted over them. I decided to switch to a CAL white and glow orange paddle tail and the trout bite did a complete turn around and really got hungry. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color.

Maximo Marina reports anglers fishing in 50 to 60 feet off of St. Pete Beach are having great fun catching hogfish, Key West grunts, porgies and mangrove snapper over rocky bottom. Live shrimp or a piece of fresh shrimp fished on the bottom has been the best bait.

With warmer temperatures moving in look for Spanish mackerel and false albacore to be on the deep ends of the fishing piers. Silver spoons and Gothca plugs will catch them. Silver trout have also showed up at the piers.

Sarasota fishing has been good for Capt. Rick Grasset. The deep grass off Stephens Point and the Middleground flats are holding speckled trout and Spanish mackerel. CAL jigs and DOA Deadly combos have been catching fish.

Capt. William Toney says the trout have finally moved in good in Homosassa. Look for them over the rocks and kelp grass. Redfish are being caught around Pea Pass and St. Martin’s River.
