Arkansas Trout Record

Arkansas Trout RecordThe Baxter Bulletin reported 1st: Calvin Johnston has one heck of a fishing tale to tell after the Olathe, Kan., man landed the third largest brown trout ever caught in Arkansas on a recent fishing trip to the White River. Johnston hooked the 38.7-pound “hog” that measured 37.5 inches on Feb. 27 while fishing at Rainbow Drive Resort in Cotter.

Calvin, 38, and his 35-year-old brother, Nathan, have been fishing for decades. Nathan, a Bryant police officer, has been coming to the White River with friends for years to enjoy the world-class trout fishing. The brothers are highly competitive when it comes to who catches the most and the biggest fish.

This year, Nathan invited his brother to come along with his buddies. Calvin, more of a bass fisherman, practiced a bit on a small pond near his Kansas home that is stocked with rainbow trout.

“I used this little power bait to see if I could figure out how to catch these fish,” Johnston said. “I caught a few, but not many.”

The group arrived at the resort about noon on Feb. 27. It was snowing and cold; in fact, the temperature tied the state-record low of 17 F for that date.

“We got there, put our stuff up, put our gear on, our waders on and went out fishing,” Johnston said. “I tied on a bait, a little rooster tail, trying different things. The water was moving pretty fast because the generators were running. I caught one, just a small rainbow. We fished for a couple of hours.”

The brothers went back to their rooms. Then, Johnston decided he wanted to fish some more. Around 5 p.m., he asked the others if they wanted to go out again. No one took him up on the offer. Seeing his waders were a little frozen, Johnston decided to fish from shore.
