Spring crappie action is red hotWhile the fruit trees are blooming, the gobblers are booming and the crappie are ripe for the picking. Roy Gentry pitched a jig and cork rig near a stick up, twitched it slightly and watched the cork disappear. Snapping the rod back the old pro drove the steel deep into the crappie’s jawand quickly boated another fillet. I pitched my rig into the same spot and nailed a crappie as well.

As we worked a shallow brush-filled ledge we pitched our jig and cork combos and continued picking up crappie in water less than three feet deep. Occasionally we’d pitch our rig near a shallow stick up and catch one or two and keep moving. The crappie were scattered along the shallow water flats and were eager to strike our offerings of Roadrunners, and Mr. Crappie Slab Daddys and Spin Daddys.

I customized my Slab Daddy with a Bass Pro Shops orange and chartreuse crappier ringer grub. And the crappie simply loved it like a kid loves candy. Although the water color was slightly stained it was much clearer in this area of the lake than the other areas we’d fished and the water temperature was warmer as well.

As we continued jigging and popping the cork rigs the crappie kept eating. In fact the later it got the better they bit. By now most of the anglers had left the lake and headed to the house but a few diehard anglers were still catching them.
