Shelby Township, MI -that they registered 141 shooters / 26 teams for the new Scholastic Pistol Program (SPP) at the 2012 SCTP Team Nationals held at The World Shooting and Recreation Complex in Sparta, IL July 17 – 21.
Participants shot nearly 30,000 rounds of 9mm ammunition (thanks to the discounted price of ammo supplied by Winchester) during the matches held at the pistol berms and over 5,000 rounds of .22 at the practice bay (sponsored by Illinois DNR).
Founding SPP partners Glock and Smith & Wesson supplied free loaner guns for those participating and staffers Ed Fitzgerald (Glock) and Tom Yost (Smith & Wesson) were on hand to instruct athletes and coaches on the safe handling of firearms and the proper procedures for competitive shooting matches.
“I would say the launch was a huge success,” stated Scott Moore, Director of the SPP program. “All the young adults and coaches were excited about the new program and we found that several of the athletes showed an immediate talent for competitive speed shooting. I’d like to thank our partners Glock and Smith & Wesson for all their support and a special thanks to Ed and Tom who stood out there with us in that heat and made sure that every athlete that wanted to give it a shot was able to.”
The SPP provides the opportunity for young adults to participate in the exciting and challenging family sport of “speed shooting” in a safe and supportive environment taught by trained and dedicated adult coaches who are focused on teaching the safe handling and firing of handguns.
SPP is organized based on age, Junior Division (ages 12-16), Senior Division (ages 17-20) and Collegiate Division (no age limit, must be full time student).
The basic competitive unit for SPP is a four person squad; each squad shoots four (4) “stages”. In SPP competition, your time is your score, calculated in conjunction with the number of misses. Total score for all stages will determine the shooters “match” score. The combined scores of the four shooters become the squad’s match score.
SPP is based on production center fire handguns (9mm) firing at steel plate targets and offers an introduction to a lifetime sport that family members can enjoy together. This new program will be a welcome addition to the SSSF family. SPP Director, Scott Moore will manage the program with assistance from Tammy Mowry. Scott has many years of experience in the shooting industry and specifically the handgun sports.
“We are excited to add this new program to the SSSF and to be able to offer yet another shooting sport opportunity to our existing and future members,” said SSSF Executive Director, Dan Hathaway. SSSF Board of Trustees Chair, Louise Terry indicated that “the SPP is a wonderful additional program that will run in parallel with the SCTP under the auspices of the SSSF, and will extend our Foundation’s ability to serve our mission of introducing more young people to the shooting sports in a team based environment”.
