It is always hard to put the hot bait down, it may be a confidence thing or you may just be stubborn! For some anglers this occurs when they need to go from a traditional topwater frog, like the Snag Proof Bobby’s Perfect or Phat Frog, to a kickin’ frog like the Wobbletron or Bobby’s Perfect Buzz.
There are certain scenarios where fishing a kicking frog shines and anglers should be putting these frogs to use. When I’m fishing the edge or open water with sparse vegetation is a great time to use the Bobby’s Perfect Buzz or Wobbletron as these will emit more action than a traditional frog would, yet they are still weedless and can be brought a top a mat of vegetation if it comes in its path on the way back to the boat.
What I like about the Bobby’s Perfect Buzz, is it fishes like a buzzbait. So what I can do with this frog is fish it around shallow laydowns or “do nothing looking” banks where bass are cruising or just up tight to the bank looking for an easy meal. When the water is super shallow, you want to get your buzzbait on top of the water quickly, but sometimes you can’t do that quickly enough, here is where the Perfect Buzz excels! As it hits the water, it is already on top of the water and ready to be retrieved!
It has been just over ten years now that soft plastic frogs have been available to bass fisherman and since their introduction they have been a fish catching option for anglers looking to fish scattered, emergent vegetation.
If you are wanting the same fish attracting action of one of these frogs, but yet want your bait to stay on top of the water after a missed strike, than the Wobbletron is exactly what you want to be rigging up. Yes, sometimes the sinking soft plastic frog bait will get bit, but in my opinion when a bass comes up to hit a frog and misses it, they are going to be looking up for that follow strike to gorge on the creature they think they just inured.
Using kickin’ frogs in the early summer is a great option, when a hollow bodied frog may just be too much for a bass to hit. Situations when this occurs are when lily pads are just starting to grow underneath the water, or when the water on your lake or river is high and has risen into the shoreline grass, making it just right to retrieve a Wobbletron through it.
So as you prepare to hit the water for your next fishing trip, be sure to pack some kickin’ frogs as you just never know when the bite will dictate their use, and who knows you may get so comfortable with them that they’ll be come your new go to frog!
