I named this big guy the Louisiana Dream Buck, it’s what every hunter thinks about just before opening day. This is one of those sad stories that nobody wants to hear but listen anyway and remember. This buck taken by archery equipment, was killed by a poacher, and can never be in the record books.
Hunting season has started all over the country now, usually the Dove Season first. I know I went out this morning only to enjoy a nice sunrise seeing doves in the distance but no shot. Those that have been indoctrinated by the outdoor hype would be disappointed as they think their ego is bruised. I just laugh at myself, I had fun regardless.
To me its not about the big monster buck or shooting the limit. Its getting to go hunting. It is a passion but not an obsession as some would want you to think. I am a hunter, I am what I am. That obsessed poacher went too far, he didn’t go by the book or the unwritten protocols, not to mention sheer stupidity.
Remember that when you take to the field this year. Go by the book and hunt fair chase. If you drop by the Pineville Office of Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries you can see the Dream Buck, take your hat off and say a little silent prayer that such a thing never happens again. The look of the buck itself immortalized by master taxidermist Bill Tyree is something you will never forget.
In today’s hunting world of instant gratification by video we sometimes forget the fact that the written word is far more important as it stimulates the imagination and urges us into high adventure. Have a look in the eyes of our youth hunters and you can see yourself back in the day. Your about to set an example, better make it a good one….Pass it on.
