If you don’t know Ish Monroe by now, it is safe to say you have been living under a rock! Monroe doesn’t only fish one pro tour, he fishes three! That’s right, three! Monroe tears up the likes of the B.A.S.S Elites, the FLW Tour and Major League Fishing. To give you an idea of how many days he was on the road this year; He left home at the beginning of January and did not return until late September.
With 101 questions about frog fishing, we asked Monroe when the best time of year to fish a frog is and what he looks for in specific cover.
“If you are fishing pads,” explains Monroe, “you might look for pads that are bigger than other pads, or you look for holes in the pads and that’s just from a pad perspective. If you are targeting grass mats you’re looking for points and mixed vegetation and if it’s docks, you fish the shaded part of the dock. You can’t pick just one particular piece of cover because the best time of year to fish a frog is 12 months out of the year. When fish are 10 feet or less, you throw the frog. Period.”
“When you fish a frog you aren’t fishing for 25 – 30 bites a day, you are fishing for 7 – 10 bites a day. Out of those 7 – 10 bites you get, you will land 5 or 6 of them but they are going to be a bigger average size than the 20 bites a day you get on other baits. Regardless of where I’m fishing and what time of year it is, my frog rod is one rod that I always have rigged up and ready to go.” Read more….
