It was extremely windy, and the finding the right lure was a little tricky. Ron Stallings of TTI-Blakemore, sent me a box of different Blakemore Road Runners, and I instantly took to the Bucktail model. My first few casts with this lure had several strikes and a couple of bass, but it still wasn’t doing what I wanted because of an abundance of weeds.
The next was the Natural Forage Baits Swim Bait, which caught a few more fish. Then it was time to switch to the Blitz Lures LLC Peanut Butter & Jerry Finesse Jig with a Mann’s Bait Company pumpkin/chartreuse Auger Frog (really wish they would make that model again – super bait to team with the Blitz Finesse Jig), which caught a couple more bass.
This still wasn’t the “trick”. So, I went to the Natural Forage Baits Jerk Shad rigged on a Daiichi Hooks Bleeding Bait Copperhead hook. Bingo, it was hit after hit, if retrieved on a slow steady retrieve. However, with a 30 mph wind, the long 8 1/2 foot Air Steelhead rod was getting a lot of vibration, which made it difficult to detect a strike. I still caught some nice fish on it.
By the end I decided to finger jig a Natural Forage Baits Lil Killer. That turned out to be the best bait, plus a lot easier to cast in any direction with the wind since it was using on a spinning outfit with a 3/16 ounce BFishn Tackle H2O jig head. I’m really anxious to try the new “mini” Killer, which will be a slightly different design, that may be coming out.
The Lil Killer caught bass, crappie and even a 27″ 8 pounds, 4 ounces channel cat. That is a lot of fun on a 7′ Shakespeare Agility rod with a Pflueger Supreme reel and 8-pound test Nanofil line.
Until next time, get out on the water, and enjoy a great day of fishing.
