Catfish bites were hard to come by at the Bass Pro Shops Big Cat Quest (BCQ) tournament in Leesburg, AL. It was a summer bite and patience was a necessity. “It was tough,” commented BCQ 2014-2015 angler of the year Larry Muse. “We would go hours without a bite. We were seeing some fish on sonar, but not really any big ones. I think the big fish were further up towards Rome. We did not expect to catch any numbers anyway because of the spawning time.”
Muse weighed in a 1.75-pound fish to win the first weigh in period from 7:00 to 8:00 am. His step day Frank Meador weighed the only other fish during the hour to take the second place slot. Meador went on to win the Senior Division (55 and over) with 5.45 pounds. The Muse team used skipjack for bait.
Big fish and overall winner, Lonnie Fountain, had a little different tactic for Weiss Lake. While most anglers prefer cut skipjack for catching big blue cats, Lonnie has one exception.
