When selecting the perfect broadhead for your hunt, marketing jargon and technical data can leave you scratching your head, but a few basic facts can help take the mystery out of your broadhead selection. First, understand there are two main types of broadheads — fixed-blade and mechanical. Fixed broadheads are machined as one solid piece, or they have replaceable blades that are fixed to the ferrule. Mechanical broadheads’ blades move on impact. They swing open and pivot through the ferrule.
Mechanical Broadhead Pros and Cons:
Pros:
Increased accuracy: A fixed broadhead’s exposed blades can interfere with the control provided by the arrow fletching, while mechanical broadhead blades are folded down during flight, reducing drag and producing more accuracy.
Larger entrance wound: Mechanical heads create larger entrance wounds than fixed broadheads.
Cons:
Less penetration: Mechanical broadheads burn energy as the blades open during impact, so they don’t penetrate as well as fixed broadheads.
Occasional failure: Mechanical broadheads have more parts than fixed broadheads, which means more opportunities for failure.
