SUPREME COURT WON’T HEAR PERUTA CASE …  The U.S. Supreme Court announced today it would not grant review in the Peruta v. California case. Applicants for California concealed carry licenses must demonstrate “good cause” to obtain one, but in San Diego, the sheriff sought a “particularized” need for self-defense. NSSF VOTING MEMBER SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED … NSSF has announced the winners of its 2017 Voting Member Scholarship Essay Contest, open to the employees and qualifying family members of NSSF’s Voting Member companies. The annual contest awards $60,000 divided between 25 winners, including one grand prize winner who receives $8,000 to apply toward their college costs.

  • The California Assembly Committee on Public Safety is scheduled to consider two bills Tuesday. SB 464 would create mandated standards for retailers to secure firearms when closed. SB 497 would prohibit acquisition of more than one handgun or long gun per month. Contact the committee and urge them to vote “NO.”
     
  • Washington State is warning of a possible full or partial shutdown of services supporting firearms sales, training and licensing if a state budget agreement is not reached by July 1.
     
  • The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, H.R. 38, introduced by U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.), has gained 200 House cosponsors. The equivalent Senate bill, S. 446, introduced by U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) has 37 cosponsors.

  • A new anti-gun study based on the mistaken premise that the criminal misuse of firearms is a public health issue demonstrates an embarrassing lack of understanding of firearms characteristics, false assumptions and shoddy research.
     
  • Seattle’s City Council promised their citizens they would raise $500 million for efforts to study and counter violence within the city. Since the gun tax was put into effect, violence has surged in Seattle and firearms retailers have exited the city.
     
  • Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (D-Conn.), who has a history of supporting gun control measures, advises anti-gunners to disguise their intentions by calling gun control by another name: “gun safety.”
     
  • The Rotary International board reversed its decision to adopt “revisions to the Code of Policies” that would have prevented local clubs from conducting or sponsoring gun shows and accepting sponsorships from gun companies or stores.
     
  • Wildfires are on pace for a record-setting year, having burned 2.5 million acres of land already in 2017. Help remind outdoor recreationists to take precautions by sharing NSSF’s Help Prevent Wildfires infographic.
