Wind and cool weather have plagued fishermen at Clear Lake all week. Every afternoon by 2 p.m. the winds have been gusting to 15-20 mph. This unusual weather has forced many of the fishermen to stay in the north end of the lake, however, the problem in the north end is the massive amount of weeds. Fishermen are having a hard time getting to their favorite areas.
The other problem is the lack of a topwater bite. When the air temperature reaches the 90s the topwater action is normally very good in the afternoons as the bass duck beneath the weed mats, but so far this year the bass have been holding out in the deeper water. Most of the local fishing guides report their clients are averaging from five to eight bass per outing. Senkos have been the top lure and two of the better areas are Henderson Point and Horseshoe Bend. The bass are holding in 20 feet of water.
A few fishermen are having success working the weed mats in the north end of the lake. One successful method of fishing the weed beds is called “punching.” This is where the fisherman uses a large worm weight of up to one ounce and pegs it tight to a 4/0 or larger hook. A large Brush Hog or other large plastic lure such as a Beaver is rigged weedless “Texas” style. The lure is flipped into the heaviest cover the fisherman can find and allowed to sink to the bottom.
