DU TV this week: Collecting DU history

This week on Ducks Unlimited TV, the crew heads to south Louisiana to meet Tony Palermo, a passionate DU volunteer and firearms collector. Co-host Field Hudnall joins Palermo to hunt the coastal marshes on opening day, enjoy some fine Cajun cuisine, and tour Palermo’s expansive collections.

In 2009, Palermo donated a complete set of DU Shotguns of the Year to Ducks Unlimited for display at its national headquarters in Memphis. It is one of only a few complete collections of the guns, which have been an important annual fundraising tool for the organization since 1973.

“As a waterfowl hunter, I can’t thank Mr. Palermo enough for collecting this waterfowl history,” said Hudnall. “And you’ve got to understand and appreciate when he did this. He didn’t do it when there was Craigslist, Ebay, Gunbroker.com. He did it when there was no internet.”

“It was quite a task to accumulate these fine weapons,” said Palermo. “I’ll tell you why I gave them [to Ducks Unlimited]. That’s where they needed to be. I need to share these with my fellow sportsmen, my fellow DU supporters. They absolutely needed to be at Ducks Unlimited Headquarters.”

Also on DU TV this week: DU CEO Dale Hall explains some of the mysteries of migrations. Retriever Trainer Mike Stewart gives tips for training your dog to work from a pit blind. And DU Magazine Shotgun Columnist Phil Bourjaily demonstrates how to hit birds that approach from behind.

DU TV airs Mondays at 1:30 a.m., Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m., Wednesdays at 8 p.m. and Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. (all times Eastern) on the Pursuit Channel. All episodes, plus bonus content and classic episodes, can be found at www.ducks.org/dutv.
