Texas Update-Other States should take note: Fishing is a popular pastime in Texas that generates some serious bucks for the state’s economy. How much? According to the results a Southwick Associates survey conducted for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, fishing generated $2.1 billion in retail sales in 2011 and another $1.1 billion in salaries and wages while supporting more than 29,000 jobs. Factoring in an economic multiplier, the economic impact of the sport is closer to $3.67 billion, the survey says. The report considered a number of demographic factors including how many anglers fished in freshwater and salt, age, income, marital status, race and other key factors. Of the $3.67 billion total, $1.67 billion was generated by freshwater fishing and $1.97 by saltwater fishing.
