Fishing Summer Camp In Abaco

Friends of the EnvironmentKids in the Bahamas will soon be experiencing a new kind of summer program as the IGFA has joined with the environmental conservation organization, Friends of the Environment (FRIENDS), to offer summer fishing camps.

Since 1988, FRIENDS has been offering educational programs for the communities in Abaco, Bahamas with the goal of preserving and protecting the island’s natural resources.  In FRIENDS, the International Game Fish Association recognized an identical mission and offered to help supplement their existing programs with fishing conservation education and expand their efforts.

After a year of planning, information sharing, and outfitting, the first camp is set to begin in Sandy Point, Abaco on July 3-4, with a second occurring on July 7-9 in Marsh Harbor.  Both camps are already sold out with kids excited to experience new learning opportunities.  IGFA fishing camps are designed to give young campers the skills needed to become self-sufficient anglers.  In addition to instruction on tying their own knots, casting spinning and fly rods, and safely de-hooking their catch back into the water, we also let the kids make their own lures.  One such lure the kids in the Bahamas will learn to create is a jig.  Effective and versatile, jigs are used around the world to catch innumerable species of fish.

With the right supplies, you can make your own jigs at home. See this step-by-step tutorial from the October/November/December 2013 issue of the IGFA’s International Angler to get started on your own!
