From the Donut Shop#3

From the Donut Shop 3 - The Outdoor WorldSeems like this is getting popular, so I’ll continue. I laid off the donuts this week so not to get overloaded with sugar. This didn’t keep me out of the outdoor world this week.

Two good men both age 30 came to the house for a visit. They came to work on the car as it was to be sold to one of them. One is family the other his life long friend. They did the work but requested a shooting and karate lesson. Neither had ever done anything like that.

I’m a direct descendant from the man who invented Sport Karate (Yamaguchi) in the shooting world my instructors were just as good. I’ve never really been in it for the money so my students are hand picked. Both my new guys can stand flat footed, leap in the air, do a back flip and land in his tracks. That gets you in the door.

Learning Karate and Shooting starting at age 30 is said to be impossible for an Instructor or Sensei..I’m both. They say you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. That’s plain wrong. The Cherokee taught me if you give the Horse a handful of salt he will get thirsty and drink on his own every time. The salt is the lesson that must be made interesting and worthwhile, the reward is the skill.

I’m not there to show off, I want the students to be as good or better than me, results are important. You show them exactly how its done and stand over them until they get it right. They should be able to split a playing card next class this time it was how to shoot and safety. They kept the 22 rounds from the Henry on a Quarter but I want it inside of a Dime. They got the punch right, now for thousands of punches. Lesson #1 the standards are high.

Safety and control is the first rule, if you can’t listen you can’t learn. Its all fun so Men, Women and Children can all be equal its the instructor that makes it happen, there are differences in the teaching.

There are a lot of good potential outdoor mentors out there. Many are Vets down at the VFW Club soaking up the suds all day. If you ask them why they don’t teach a few people, you will get the same answer…”I don’t have enough time.” I seem to have all the time in the world….Pass it on.
