Genz is never done innovating, or fishingMidland Daily News Reported: Who is Dave Genz, if not a wildly innovative angler? Back in the 1980s, he pioneered the concept of mobile ice fishing, using high-quality spinning reels on short rods, guided by open-water boat electronics, and stashing and towing it all over the ice in tub sleds that became shelters: Fish Traps. He developed and freely shared approaches to hardwater fishing, devising techniques and designing equipment, and having a hand in developing many items in the industry-leading Clam Corporation line.

Now, he’s repaid some of ice fishing’s debt to open water.

Last week, at the annual convention of the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers here, Genz showed off, and hosted some anglers on, what’s become known as the Holey Boat, a flat-bottomed craft into which a pair of holes have been cut and then topped with something like a stovepipe. Ice-fishing-style Vexilar fish sounders are mounted, and anglers fish through the hole at the top of the pipe, just as if it were a hole in the ice.
