I never since the 1980s had a lot of faith in Hyper Vel 22 ammo. At the time I needed a bit more power for New Mexico Jack Rabbits than normal High Speed hollow points. Other wise I had little use for them.
Moving ahead in time, I was doing some hunting round tests for squirrel hunting finding Winchester High Speed Power Points the perfect round for my Henry Frontier 22. I went back to the store to get more and found Winchester also had a Hyper Vel load that fired the same bullet a 40 grain hollow point. The difference was High Speed 1280 fps and Hyper Vel 1435 fps.
Testing the Hyper Vel in three good rifles, A CZ-452, the Henry and a Ruger 77/22 revealed mixed results. So terrible was the 5 shot group with the Henry I had to re fire a group with another brand of ammo to insure there was nothing wrong with the rifle. The rifle was fine it just didn’t shoot Hyper Vel well. The CZ didn’t either but not as bad, while the Ruger turned in a fine group. In the photo the lower right group was the redeemer for the Henry using Aguila Standard Velocity.
When picking a brand of ammo sometimes you wont get the results you want. Don’t despair keep testing and you will find the right one, its fun…Pass it on.
