It is that time of year when punching mats is the thing to do all over the deep South. Everyone has dusted off that broom stick called a super heavy rod and filled their spools with tow rope called braid, tied on a 2 oz flipping weight and their favorite plastic and set out to aerate the matted grass. About once a week this time of year I get a call from an angler who is frustrated with their current tungsten provider because they broke a gorilla off on the hookset. Most think that their current weight provider is producing a product that abraids their line. While I would love for them to throw their high priced name brand tungsten in the lake and give me an opportunity to earn their business, in most cases $2 will prevent the frustration. If you think about the force that is exerted on the knot when you fire that broom stick with the tow rope attached, it is kinda like a freight train hitting a Yugo. The knot takes all the punishment and sometimes it crushes it enough to break it. So, if you are crushing the knot on hookset, buy a pack of $2 composite beads(Not glass or plastic) made for tungsten and put one under the weight. You will put a few more fish in the boat. Hope this helps someone catch the fish of a lifetime.
