Democrat and Chronicle 1st reported: James VanArsdall of West Henrietta has officially been recognized for breaking the state record for freshwater drum, a fish more commonly referred to as sheepshead and vastly underrated for its fight. VanArsdall caught the fish weighing 26 pounds, 9 ouncesand measuring 33½ inches in Irondequoit Bay on June 14. After getting the fish officially weighed on a scale at Mitchel’s Bait & Tackle in Charlotte, VanArsdall submitted details to the DEC’s Angler Achievement Program. The fish, which broke the previous mark by more than 2 pounds, passed specific qualifying criteria and VanArsdall was awarded a lapel pin.
VanArsdall’s catch is the second newly listed record of 2014. On May 14, Eric Lester established a new inland state record when he caught a 60-pound striped bass in the Hudson River. The state has a new free mobile app for fishing, hunting and wildlife watching opportunities suitable for use on iPhone and Android devices.
Local anglers dominate: It was a record-setting day at a New York BASS Chapter Federation event held on Cayuga Lake, with Rochester’s Jeremy Douglas finishing first overall with a weight of 23.49 pounds. That was a record five-fish limit for the 42-year-old Federation, which consists of BASS-sanctioned clubs from around the state.
Douglas fished the lake’s north end in shallow weed cover using a drop-shot rig. Taking second was Rochester’s T.J. Valle (21.5 pounds) while Rochester’s Chris O’Brien, who finished first at Plattsburgh and is winning the Angler of the Year standings, was fifth overall (16.06).
