Every year as we approach the post spawn fishing I look forward to the deep cranking bite; for me there is just nothing sweeter! I guess there is just an enormous amount of reasons that I love the deep cranking bite but the main reason is the ability to catch so many big fish in a short amount of time. There for sure is nothing more fun than getting a big school of bass competing for a deep running crank bait.
The problem is most fisherman fishing grass lakes like Guntersville never have a need to learn how to deep crank bait as the lake always offers good fishing in the shallows most of the year with grass lines and structure offering easy targets. The thing you have to do is experience it one time, be in the thick of a school of 5 to 6 pound fish pounding your crank bait and competing for your bait. When this happens I promise you that you will be addicted to the your deep running crank bait and life as you know it fishing shallow will change drastically and you’ll never forget what it is like.
The thing I here most of the time from many people about deep running crank baits is that it is a tiring and hard working presentation that will wear you down, and this seems to stick in the mind of those who have never tried it. Folks I am well into the age where all fishing is tiring but I can do it so I believe you can too. The key is proper equipment, rigging is everything and the only thing to the deep running crank bait fisherman; you just have to break down and use the right equipment. The properly equipped crank bait fisherman is rigged with long cranking rods properly weighted and flexed to meet the needs of a deep running crank bait. Slow retrieve cranking reels 5:1:1 or slower, fluorocarbon 10 to 12 pound test line that sinks, making long casts to drive the crank bait to its designed depths. My choices are Duckett 7’11” medium heavy cranking rods with a Lew’s cranking reel 5:1:1 rigged with Vicious 12 lb. test Pro Elite Fluorocarbon line fishing a SPRO Little John DD 70 crank bait. When you get to the right depth with the correct equipment you will be addicted!
