So, I switched out my open water tackle in the back of the Yukon for my Frabill rod/reel combos, shelter, etc; Jiffy Ice Drills; Vexilar Inc K-Drill Ice Auger System and selection of Custom Jigs & Spins and Power Baits.
I left a few open water items to use for floating jigs over wintering areas. In fact, for a very short time I went to the Rock Island Conservation Club and found that the east lake was totally open. Crappie are hitting on the deep side of submerged brush in about 7 to 9 feet of water, and suspending around 4 to 5 feet. They were hitting Slap Daddys tipped with Crappie Nibbles. I would have tried a little longer, but the windchill was too much. This time I was wearing gloves, but my hands were still frozen to the point of where I didn’t have enough strength or feel to hold a Crappie Nibble and run it on a hook. Now that is bad. My hands are still having problems and it has been 6 hours since I was on the water.
I was also able to start my new Jiffy 44Pro, which runs great and is very quiet. I’m anxious to see how it performs on the ice.
Speaking of drills, remember I have my last year’s pro staff Pro4 (propane model), which drilled very few holes, for sale. I’m selling it with a motor cover and spare set of blades, but the blades that are on it are like new, so they won’t need changing soon. The drill is the 8-inch size with the quick connect coupler. Jiffy will not grant a warranty on this unit since it has not been sent back for service, and is being sold as used. The price is $275.
Until next time, get out on the water, and enjoy a great day of fishing.
