On June 23, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery Founder and President Sam Calagione and his teenage son, Sammy, will step aboard their Boston Whaler and embark on an epic 600-mile journey up the northeastern seaboard. “We love our Whaler,” said Sam of the 19-foot Montauk he and Sammy will be using for their trip. The original S.S. Dogfish was a 13-foot Whaler, and last year the Calagiones upgraded to the current Montauk. “It’s such a well-made, smooth-running boat and a company with such an amazing heritage. It’s only fitting that we’ll be touching down in Boston Whaler’s namesake city and wrapping up our adventure in Dogfish Head, Maine.”
The trip, scheduled to be completed July 1, serves to mark the opening of the new Dogfish Inn, located in coastal Delaware, while raising money and awareness for The Nature Conservancy. At five stops along the journey-Atlantic City, Manhattan, Block Island, Boston and Portland-Sam will dock his Whaler and proceed to host multicourse beer dinners at some of his favorite restaurants. Each location participating in this “Moveable Feast” will donate $2,000 to The Nature Conservancy, a nonprofit dedicated to conserving “the lands and waters on which all life depends,” for a total of $10,000.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Sam for his incredible trip and support each feast along the way,” said Jeff Vaughn, Boston Whaler’s VP of Sales, Marketing and Customer Service. “It’s a terrific opportunity to raise money and awareness for The Nature Conservancy, and to celebrate the spirit of adventure and innovation that Sam and Boston Whaler both share.”
In between feast events, the father-son duo will also make stops to hike, paddleboard and photograph some of the coastal properties The Nature Conservancy has protected. They’ll see places like South Cape May Meadows, a globally renowned birding spot at the southern tip of New Jersey; and Berry Woods Preserve, home to a multi-use mosaic of conservation near Maine’s Kennebec River. “Boating is how our family stays connected to nature, so cruising from one location to the next made perfect sense,” said Sam. “Making the trip by Whaler was the only logical way to go.”
