Trout are the glamour dolls of the angling world, and largemouth bass have the star power. But catfish are the real marquee attraction. At least they are in Keith Sutton’s fishing world. His latest book, “Hardcore Catfishing: Beyond the Basics” (Skyhorse Publishing, soft cover, illustrated, 179 pages, $22.90), will likely turn anyone into a catfish fan.
The bewhiskered brutes do have much going to them. They are found nearly everywhere freshwater flows. They provide tremendous sport on rod and reel tackle. A couple of cat species (blues and flatheads, both of which are found in Kentucky) can grow to more than 100 pounds. They serve up excellent table fare. They can even be caught by hand.
This and more are plainly and entertainingly explained in “Hardcore Catfishing.” Sutton, author of five catfish-flavored books, says cats may have been missing angling’s spotlight but have never fallen from favor with fishermen.
