NSSF ANNOUNCES NEW STAR-RATING RANGE PROGRAM . . . NSSF is pleased to announce the launch of its completely revamped Star-Rating Range Program. Created to acknowledge those indoor shooting range facilities that excel across a wide variety of criteria, the new program will be will be headed by NSSF’s Manager of Shooting Promotions, Zach Snow. SUPREME COURT WON’T HEAR CONN. LAW CHALLENGE . . . The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear the appeal challenging Connecticut’s ban on modern sporting rifles. The Connecticut law, similar to those recently challenged in New York and Maryland, previously was upheld as constitutional by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Because the Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal, the Second Circuit’s opinion that a ban on an entire class of commonly used firearms is constitutional remains the law in Connecticut.

ATF Q&A . . . More great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. One question asks what importer should be entered into the A&D book when the foreign manufacturer and the importer have the same company name. Another question asks if a United States-issued passport is a valid form of identification for a firearms purchaser to provide to an FFL.
NOT BUYING PUBLIC HEALTH PRESCRIPTION . . . The American Medical Association’s latest effort to obtain federal funding for “gun violence” research is not going anyplace on Capitol Hill. The AMA said it would “actively lobby” to lift long-standing Congressionally-imposed restrictions on such research by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). However, Republican members of Congress, including some belonging to the House Doctors Caucus, say they won’t write the AMA’s research prescription. NSSF’s Larry Keane is quoted in this story in The Hill.
STATE ROUNDUP . . . The California Assembly and Senate Committees on Public Safety last week approved anti-gun measures: AB 1664, AB 1673, AB 1674, SB 880 and SB 1235. The New Jersey Assembly Judiciary Committee today passed A1426. The bill would impose a new “smart gun” mandate requiring all retailers in the state to carry in inventory at least one model of an authorized-user technology-equipped firearm.

2017 SHOT BUSINESS AWARDS NOMINATIONS CONTEST OPENS . . . NSSF is pleased to announce that it has opened its annual nominations contest for the 2017 SHOT Business Awards. The contest was created in 2015 to better engage its members and improve feedback about those industry colleagues who most actively support the NSSF’s projects and mission. Read more.

The Flathead County Sheriff’s Department, Kalispell P.D. and mayor of Kalispell, Montana, partnered with NSSF’s Project ChildSafe program to give away free gun locks and encourage safe storage of firearms in conjunction with the Professional Outdoor Media Association Conference last week.
NSSF AT POMA CONFERENCE . . . At the Professional Outdoor Media Association conference last week, NSSF sponsored the Shooting Day luncheon at which it promoted its #GUNVOTE initiative, the Project ChildSafe “Own It? Respect It. Secure It” campaign and the many resources NSSF provides to outdoor communicators.
