I got totally skunked on Dove Hunting, but I had fun. Now I’m ready for the Deer Season. To me that’s serious groceries, and I’m getting serious this year. I did the youth hunter training and the kid got the big buck so now its my turn. I have had a two year lull and still hanging at 149 lifetime harvests. Around here that’s really not a lot but I like to eat venison.
First I needed a good private land place to hunt. I actually walked up knocked on the door and got permission, the old way. That was pure luck by the way.
My archery season opens 16 September, then we have an Honorable Discharged Veterans hunt (gun either sex), Primitive Gun Season (either sex) and then the Either Sex gun hunt in my WMA, and the Dog Deer Season or still hunt. The limit is 6 (4 antlerless and two bucks) or (3 antlerless and 3 bucks) there is plenty of public land and plenty of deer.
My guns are zeroed and ready. I have several depending on the situation like a golf bag of clubs. I don’t play golf too busy hunting a fishing. However the owner of the local golf course told me he is closing down. He said the millennials don’t play anymore, and give up readily. Notably this is true to hunting as well.
Many of the core hunters have just quit or never started. I can drive for miles on a WMA and never see another hunter. The trend is video games and the dope problem; so I hunt alone.
I backpack the OleMan tree stand back in as far as I can get it, and put out the sent tabs. Depending on the stand and view I could use the 7.62×39, 284, 308, 30-06 or the 45-70. I go light in the morning and 45-70 in the afternoon. I don’t like tracking at night and you don’t leave a deer in the woods over night here as it will be devoured by everything.
I have one place to scout this year everything else is go to and set up the deer are always there and with the dwindling hunter population I have the woods to myself. I will take you all on that scouting trip soon…Pass it on.
