Ann Arbor officials are inviting residents to attend a second public meeting on the topic of deer management Thursday night as city officials continue to consider lethal and non-lethal methods of controlling the city’s deer population. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Slauson Middle School, 1019 W. Washington St.
The meeting will include a review of highlights from a citizen survey, and a question-and-answer session with a staff member from the city of Rochester Hills regarding the experience implementing a non-lethal deer management plan there.
The city also is letting a pro-cull group called Washtenaw Citizens for Ecological Balance present a deer management plan that includes lethal methods. The group argues deer are causing damage to the local ecosystem.
Another group called Citizens for Safe Deer Management, which is opposed to killing deer in the city, also plans to attend the meeting.
City officials have been looking into different options for controlling the city’s deer population since last year, after hearing concerns from some residents that deer seem to be growing in numbers and are causing damage to plants and gardens. Some residents also have raised concerns about deer-vehicle crashes.
There were 50 deer-vehicle crashes reported in Ann Arbor last year, one of which involved a personal injury. None were fatal.
