One of the best multi-species, all-season crankbait lineups just got better with the release of the Scatter Rap® Shad Deep. Combining the inimitable balsa buoyancy and baitfish body of a Shad Rap® with a deep-diving Scatter Lip™, Rapala’s newest offering brings evasive action to strike zones in the 9-to-12 feet range.
Measuring 2-3/4 inches and weighing 1/4 ounce, the Scatter Rap Shad Deep features two No. 6 VMC® Black Nickel Treble Hooks. It runs silently, floats when paused and comes in 16 color patterns: Firetiger, Helsinki Shad, Yellow Perch, Bleak, Dark Brown Crawdad, Perch, Shad, Bluegill, Hot Steel, Mardi Gras, Silver, Demon, Golden Alburnus, Purpledescent, Blue Back Herring and Caribbean Shad.
Four original Scatter Rap models, including the Scatter Rap Shad, cover the 5-to-8-foot depth range. The Scatter Rap Shad Deep joins the Scatter Rap Crank Deep, released last year, in covering the 9-to-12-foot portion of the water column.
“That’s right in the wheelhouse of most crankers,” says Mark Fisher, Rapala’s director of field promotions. “Whether you’re fishing deep weedline edges, extended points or rockpile humps, there’s a lot of feeding activity that happens offshore in that depth.”
But, depth numbers alone don’t tell the whole story — Scatter Raps not only cover the water column vertically, they extend coverage horizontally as well.
“It will be a killer offshore, because it’s got that erratic lateral action,” Fisher adds. “Fish have never seen that action out there.”
Featuring what’s best described as “evasive action,” Scatter Raps perfectly mimic spooked baitfish fleeing a predator, moving unpredictably from one side to the next, back to center, and then kicking out to one side again. That built-in ability to change directions is what makes Scatter Raps so deadly, says legendary angler Al Lindner, host of television’s “Angling Edge”.
“You’re getting a directional change not only up and down, but also left or right,” Lindner explains. “That’s what triggers fish to strike.”
To catch fish with a Scatter Rap, no elaborate rod-tip maneuvers, wrist motions or jigging strokes are necessary. The bait’s revolutionary curved Scatter Lip creates all the action by itself. “You don’t have to do anything but reel,” Lindner says.
Suggested retail price: $8.99.
