It is with regret that the Whitney Point Sportsmen’s Association and the Broome County Department of Parks and Recreation announce the Postponement of the 2015 Almost-Annual New York State Crappie Derby. The moderate temperatures of December (especially the above average low temperatures) did not allow for ice coverage of Whitney Point Lake. January 7, 2015 was the first day that ice completely covered the lake but this is insufficient ice even for a single person to access the lake. We reviewed historical records on ice growth projections along with weather projections and find that it would be futile to try to stage the event on January 31. Instead we have changed the date to our back-up date of February 14, 2015.
In addition to the fishing, we will try to schedule other attractions to entertain our guests at our on-the-ice Midway. Previous partners have been The Ross Park Zoo, Finch Hollow Nature Center, National Weather Service, Broome County Underwater Dive Team and the Triangle EMT’s. We also hope to bring back the Whitney Point Rotary Clubs “Free Skate”. Of course, we’re always open to other venues as well.
This year would have been the 41st annual attempt to stage our “family friendly” outdoors event.
The derby attracts participants and visitors from a number of nearby states as well as most regions of New York State. One year, approximately 8,000 people attended. The derby is intended to be a “day out” after the typically cold months of December and January. It is frequently called “a party on the ice” due to its’ format.
