Rigging out a Super Squirrel Rifle

Rigging out a Super Squirrel RifleRigging out a Super Squirrel Rifle. Most people want an expensive bolt action for this, and like all the others I have one, a CZ-452 with a Bushnell 6×18 scope. This one has won world squirrel rifle championships. But I want a Cowboy squirrel gun so here goes. Anthony Imparato sent me a Henry Lever Action with a cool Octagon barrel. Nothing else fancy as this is a show off hunter. At the range everybody wanted one as we shot tiny targets all the way out to 100 yards off hand with iron sights.

I sent for a fine Vortex Crossfire II 3x9x40 scope with my favorite V-Bright dot. It was proven on the Ruger Scout 308 so why not the .22? This would be perfect and I like perfect. This is the reason why. When you go squirrel hunting in Louisiana you have a good chance of running into a Louisiana Wild Boar. I have killed several with a .22 and it ain’t easy. The shot must be perfect at the base of the ear or nothing.

Most squirrels (and hogs) are taken less than 50 yards mostly 25. I prefer my other Henry for Hogs the 45-70 but that’s a little too much for squirrels and Louisiana doesn’t allow centerfires in the woods if its not deer season.

Ammo depends on the situation, any 22 will kill a squirrel so accuracy comes into play. Wolf Match Extra, Eley High Velocity Hollow Points and Remington High Velocity Hollow Point are my favorites.

Our Deer Season runs to the end of January with breaks in between, so I’m going to sneak in a squirrel hunt. Its been a long time since I collected a limit of 8 squirrels, lets see what happens…Pass it on.
