This years event will be held October 4-19, 2013 along the shores of Brevard County. During this year’s SCISFT, anglers of all ages will be vying for thousands of dollars in cash and prizes. During the fifteen days of competition, anglers will test their surf and paddle fishing skills to catch as many different species of fish that cruise the beaches of Space Coast (Brevard County). The paddle angler and shore angler catching the overall most inches of fish (accumulate by measuring two-to-six different species) will receive the top prizes of $1,000 and one of them will be designated the 2013 International Surf Fishing Champion of the World.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Anglers for Conservation’s “Hook Kids on Fishing” programs www.anglersforconservation.org. Each year, these programs introduce thousands of children and parents to recreational fishing for the first time.
A Unique Idea
When the idea of crowning an International Surf Fishing Angler Champion first came to us, we immediately knew there was no better place for anglers to compete for this one-of-a-kind title than along the beaches of Florida’s Indian River Lagoon Coast.
How could there be a better place for anglers to fish and to decide such an honorable title? Not only because the IRL Coast has long been respected by many anglers as one of the world’s best locations to target a long list of gamefish, but more than that it is the sum of three factors that earns the IRL Coast this rightful honor.
This honor is buoyed by a combination of resources: more species of fish live in these waters than in any other place in the North America continent; there is unlimited free access to the vast majority of these beaches and the area experiences year round fishing. These attributes form the very foundation of the Second Annual Space Coast International Surf Fishing Tournament, taking place October 4-19, 2013.
Species
Unlike other tournaments where anglers target only a few specific species, this event is formatted to highlight the numerous species of the IRL Coast.
All legal saltwater species are eligible except for tarpon and sharks.
However, there will be a Tarpon DNA Sample contest within our tournament. The angler returning the most tarpon DNA samples during this tournament will win a special prize supplied by the FWC and Mote Marine Laboratory Tarpon Genetic Recapture Study Team.
