Clarion – Ledger reported 1st: “I’d rather be lucky than good,” the old saying goes. But when it comes to tackling state records for the heaviest male alligator, Scott Berry of Raymond appears to be just plain good. Saturday morning, excitement began to build as word spread about a possible new state record for heaviest male alligator. Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks’ Alligator Program coordinator Ricky Flynt soon confirmed it.
A 756-pound alligator had been harvested by Robert Mahaffey of Brandon.
That gator bested Lee “Dalco” Turner’s 2013 record gator that weighed 741.5 pounds.
While the record went to Mahaffey, the tag-holder, Berry was among the team that captured the beast.
That record stood less than three days before Flynt officially weighed another Mississippi River monster this morning.
Brian Montgomery of Starkville smashed that record with a gator that weighed 792 pounds. The alligator was 13-feet, 5-nches long and measured 69 1/4 inches in belly girth and 51 inches in tail girth. And once again, Berry was on that team.
Two record gators in one season?
“It’s not the first time someone has been involved in a record twice, but it’s the first time someone has been involved back-to-back in one season,” Flynt said. “That’s pretty rare.
“That’s a unique experience that someone could be involved in two records in one season, and certainly within three days.”
