I’ve found I can be moody. One day I’m in a bluegill mood…the next a pike, then a crappie or walleye. Right now, I’m thinking lake trout. So when my cell phone rings and the name appearing on the screen is Steve Bunka, it’s very much a welcomed call. Steve’s an HT pro staffer from Saskatchewan, Canada who along with fishing partner Andrew “Smitty” Smith, has been working to make the final arrangements for our upcoming lake trout trip to Saskatchewan. Hopefully, this will be the call finalizing details.
Answering, I’m not disappointed.
“We’re all set,” Steve confirms. “The ice conditions are great on Lac La Plonge. It’s a bit of a drive from Saskatoon, and we’ll be somewhat isolated in a relatively remote setting, so be sure to bring everything you’ll need for a four day outing. However, the good news is we’ll be staying at Angler’s Trail, a full service resort. Their cabins are right on the water, plus we’ll have running water and kitchenettes.”
These guys are amazing. Trying to secure accommodations in the middle of winter is never easy, much less in a semi-remote area of Saskatchewan–and being able to find a nice one so convenient to where we plan to fish on Lac La Plonge, waters featuring a quality lake trout fishery—well, it simply doesn’t get any better.
“I’m not sure how you guys do this,” I tell Steve, “but this is terrific. I can’t wait to arrive in Saskatchewan!”
This will be our second trip to the Province of Saskatchewan in two years. Last winter, we fished pike and walleye on Tobin Lake with Charles Webb out of Pruden’s Point Resort, and enjoyed an outstanding adventure. I don’t expect anything less this time around. This year we’ll be joined by Ed Carleton, the defensive coordinator for the Saskatchewan Huskies football team, and Dan Mailand, the owner of Angler’s Trail Resort.
After a flight from the Twin Cities to Saskatoon, we meet, re-pack and after a substantial drive up to Beauval, we finally arrive at Angler’s Trail in the wee hours of the morning. I’m surprised to find the owners, Dan and Jodie, still awake, sitting up playing cards and waiting to greet us regardless of the hour. Introductions are followed by plans for the morning, and we all soon settle into our cabins for a little rest. Read on at TGO…..
