New world IGFA record applications have recently been submitted for an impressive payara on fly from Colombia, a huge yellowtail from Japan, and a giant trevally for a Junior Angler from Australia.
Meads’ Giant Trevally -Aussie angler Ryan Meads – age 10 – caught this 30.64 kg (67 lb 8 oz) giant trevally (Caranx ignoblis) on December 9th while fishing out of Macay, Australia with his father Ian Meads. Using only a sporting 8 kg (16 lb) line, the young Meads skillfully played the rugged GT for over an hour after it crushed the ballyhoo he was trolling. If approved, the catch will become the new Male Smallfry world record, which currently stands at 18.73 kg (41 lb 4 oz).
Tokunaga’s California Yellowtail – Japanese angler Kenzo Tokunaga caught and released this massive 133 cm California yellowtail (Seriola lalandi) on November 25th while fishing off Tsushima, Japan. Tokunaga needed only 10 minutes to land the hard-fighting yellowtail after it crushed the lure he was casting. If approved, the catch will become the new All-Tackle Length world record, which currently stands at 102 cm.
Bravo’s Payara – Colombian angler Jose David Bravo caught and released this impressive 9.07 kg (20 lb) payara (Hydrolycus spp.) while fly fishing Colombia’s Guaviare Tributary on January 13th. Bravo coerced a bite from the toothy fish with an articulated deceiver pattern fly, and needed only 6 minutes to land the fish after hooking up. If approved, the catch will become the new men’s 10 kg (20 lb) tippet class world record, which currently stands at 7.71 kg (17 lb).
