When it comes to fishing for and catching crappie not many folks know more than Sam Heaton. After all, he is considered to be the first crappie guide in the country, plying his trade on Weiss Lake in Alabama. Well known for his current position in the industry with Johnson Outdoors, Sam has been an influence on the crappie scene for a long time.
The History
Sam grew up in North Eastern Alabama where hunting and fishing was about recreation and putting dinner on the table. Lessons learned in his active childhood would benefit him later in life as his passion for fishing led him to a career in the outdoor industry.
Sam’s fishing knowledge began early in life. “My grandmother took me fishing in her old Hudson with a couple cane poles tied on the top.” According to Sam she had long ago determined the need for different length poles in different applications. “I remember she had a long pole about 14 feet long, a medium pole about 10 feet and a short one for the creek,” explained Sam.
Sam’s easy going and comedic disposition shines through as he concluded the story about his grandmother. “She had an old Sunday purse full of hooks and weights. If I got into her tackle purse without asking, she would have another use for that cane pole.”
