It’s tempting to borrow phrases from the original “Star Trek” television show when talking about how Torpedo Deep Sea Divers from Torpedo Fishing Products can “boldly go where no diver has gone before.” But the statement is accurate. Designed to hold a hydrodynamically efficient Torpedo Diver weight, Torpedo Deep Sea Divers can take lures beyond 400-foot depths and keep them from tangling with each other. Even without the added Torpedo Diver, anglers will achieve greater depths with less line out.
“Our design allows the Torpedo Deep Sea Diver to plane down at a steeper angle than the other diver planers on the market, making it a great diver for traditional applications without adding a Torpedo Diver,” says company founder Matthew Sawrie. “When you add a Torpedo Diver to the special eyelet on the leading edge, instead of the sky being the limit, the bottomless abyss is the limit.”
The Torpedo Deep Sea Divers feature a clip that, when closed, creates the steep dive angle. When a fish hits, the clip pops open, allowing the angler to fight the fish unimpeded by water pressure against the Torpedo Deep Sea Diver. Because the Torpedo Diver weight is so efficient as it comes through the water, it adds no resistance while fighting a fish. The Torpedo Deep Sea Divers also feature an adjustable weight that allows anglers to choose how far to the either side of the boat the diver will go.
One of the pioneers of “way-deep” fishing for salmon on the Great Lakes is Capt. Mark Chmura of Manistee, Michigan, who fills coolers for his clients with fish caught 400 feet down and deeper. Chmura provided some design insights for the Deep Sea and field-tested it for king salmon he targets in what he terms the “stability zone.” These are depths below most currents and where the low water temperature stays attractive to kings throughout the year.
“The Torpedo Deep Sea Divers give me another option for taking flashers and other lures way deep and spread apart where currents and turning the boat won’t cause tangles,” says Chmura.
The Torpedo Deep Sea Diver will be packaged by itself and with the 12-ounce Torpedo Diver Cuda, the biggest of the four Torpedo Divers the company offers. The smaller models of Torpedo Divers attach just as easily to a Torpedo Deep Sea Diver, which means anglers have many options for probing different depths while keeping lines spread apart.
The Torpedo Deep Sea Divers currently are available in four metallic finishes (silver, red, blue and green) as well as white, clear and black. For more information, check out www.torpedodivers.com.
