Trophy Bass Time

Fish Lake Guntersville Guide ServiceAs we move further into winter the one thing that is always a great part of the cold days of January and February is the pure fact that this is trophy time of year. The Guntersville lake record of 14.8 lbs. was caught in February of 1991 and the next record whenever it gets broke will once again be caught in the winter months of January or February. There is no secret to the success of catching big fish this time of year, but persistence and commitment to hanging that big fish is a key element.

The commitment part of this process is a tough sell to many as fighting cold, rain and wind in the winter time is not easy and for sure is not for the weak at heart; being on the water during this time frame can really test your resolve. The tough part about this time of year is the bass fishing is slow; you’re out on the water for just a few bites and staying focused with the winter time elements combined with a slow bite is very challenging. The reward of being dedicated and overcoming the elements of winter time can be extremely rewarding as the lunker record setting bass is out there in most lakes and if you’re tough it may very well be you become the next record holder in your lake.

The record fish to me is caught with just a few types of presentations, I believe in today’s baits there are a few that will give you that opportunity to put that size fish in the boat. The always reliable football jig is my first choice, it can be moved or crawled slowly on the bottom and when the water is cold it is big fish bait. Swim baits have changed bass fishing and crawling a big six inch or more swim bait along the deep edges of stumps or grass can be a big time reward. Lastly big baits big fish is a long time belief of mine and many times in the cold of winter a big worm slithering down a drop can be very rewarding in the cold of winter.
Tough will overcome and if your that guy the reward in winter will be worth it!
