U.S. marine surprised by great white

species.

Fangman used a chunk of batray for bait and carried it out on a kayak so he could drop it in eight feet of water about 30 yards past the breakers. He had been waiting for a bite with his one-year-old daughter and wife for just over an hour when he picked up the rod.

“I was going to reel it in and call it a day when something hit,” Fangman said.

That started an improbable battle with one of nature’s most respected predators. Fangman, an accomplished angler had caught a number of of sharks fishing the Gulf Coast in Texas and had the right tackle. The sheer power of the shark after the initial strike let Fangman know he had hooked something big and powerful. The fight lasted about 25 minutes before he caught a glimpse of it.

“I was hoping for a mako shark because you can keep them, but it turned out to be a great white,” he said.

Fangman estimated the shark to be 9 1/2 feet in length. He then turned his attention to getting the shark back to the ocean.

“I wanted to do everything right,” Fangman said. “I was so happy to see the shark swim away.”
