USA Shooting Takes 13 Medals in Spain Grand Prix

USA Shooting LogoThe USA Shooting Team left to compete in the Spain Grand Prix in Granada last week for one purpose: To become familiar with the conditions and environment awaiting them at the site of the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Championship later this summer. Hopefully the 32-member team competing also became familiar with winning at the CEAR Juan Carlos I range as U.S. athletes brought home 13 medals in the process: Five gold, four silver and four bronze.

Michael McPhail (U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit / Darlington, Wis., pictured winning Prone gold) led the medal count, winning gold in Men’s Three-Position and Prone Rifle. Three gold medals also went to shotgun athletes: 2012 Olympian Frank Thompson (Alliance, Neb.) in Men’s Skeet, Brandy Drozd (Bryan Texas) in Women’s Skeet and Jeff Holguin (USAMU / Yorba Linda, Calif.) in Men’s Double Trap.

With more than 2,000 competitors set to compete, the World Championship is by far the biggest shooting event every quadrennium and the competition will be intense with the start of Olympic qualification with 64 quota spots available. Two times more quota spots will be available at this World Championship than in any other competition the next two years leading up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
