Clarionledger.com First Reported: Crazy weather, fishing and ‘other things’ occurred this past week. Got the pictures to prove some of the stories, but you are just gonna have to take my word on others… The Sport Trail trailers logged some miles, the boats were all over the place. We fished the reefs, bridges, CAT island and LA Marsh. Water has still been dirty most days, but we are getting to that magic 70-72 degree mark. I can only imagine once this last front gets through, and things settle down, it should be game freaking on!
Had a good one on Thursday. One of my high school buddies was in town. Steve Saucier, his Dad and his two brothers (Donny and Jimmy) were with me for a great trip to the LA Marsh. Got to catch up what is going on in his world, and catch some nice fish in the process. We logged some miles doing the stick and move through the marsh. Water was super low for the first part of the morning, but it was clean. Worked on some nice reds and sheepshead. Never did find a wide open bite, but grabbed fish at most every stop. The trout were spotty, but they are getting better and better every trip. Even in the low water, we grabbed some keepers on the Boat Monkey Popping corks with Matrix plastics under them. Opening night or salt and pepper were the top producers. Did find some bull reds mixed in with them as well.
Back at the dock, we found one of the most amazing and disturbing things inside one of the reds. We almost always check the stomachs of the fish we catch, just to see what they chewing on. Well… one of the smaller bull’s stomachs was about to pop. With Capt. Matt and the Sauciers at my side, I pulled a freaking PLASTIC WATER BOTTLE out of the red’s stomach. It was a 12 oz. bottle that had been crushed with the cap back on. I have no theories or explanations, only a remedy. Keep your trash in a sealed compartment. Fish seemed to be in good shape, but I don’t know how long that bottle was in there. Glad we caught him, no way that guy was gonna digest that thing.
Capt. Kenny was workin’ a near shore trip with Mrs. Norma and Mrs. Lois. Business as usual for them on the puppy drum and sea monsters. Kenny said the big ones were making them work. They were schooled and spooled by the majority of the big black drum. Friday we had three boats out, two on a near shore an one in the marsh. Capt. Kenny and Capt. Alex were making a good day of it on the big drum, puppy drum and red fish. Alex was with Team Kada and Kenny was with Team McKellar. Very happy to see more and more reds on the near shore trips. I actually enjoy eating the puppy drum more, but I know most people we fish really like the reds. Just glad to have both available so close to the dock. Got nice weather most of the morning and both boats were able to cover plenty of ground. The water is still dirty in close from the flooded rivers, but the black drum and reds don’t seem to mind.
